History of the WCGA

 

... from the handwritten notes of the first meeting and tournament: The Women's Carolinas organization was organized in 1921 at Sans Souci Country Club in Greenville, South Carolina, where women golfers of the Carolinas met for an invitational tournament. The first annual tournament of the WCGA opened at Charlotte Country Club on June 12, 1922.

According to the first program, the "course is open to visitors at 9am, June 11. At 5:30pm an informal reception and tea will be held at the Club House" - and on the last evening, a dance.

"Qualifying scores were Dorothy Dotger, 96, Mrs. W. L. Pierce, 100, Mrs. W. H. Willard, 103 (all from Charlotte.  Miss Edith Moore (Asheville) "played the best golf of the visitors and was 4th at 104."

Forty-two golfers representing every section of the Carolinas were entered in the tournament. The tournament was supposed to have been played in Greensboro where Mrs. Bernard Cone, President, lived, but the burning down of the club house at Greensboro necessitated a change to some other country club course. Asheville and Linville both put in bids, but Charlotte was accepted. Miss Dotger broke three records at Charlotte Country Club during the tournament which she won.

The 2nd tournament, held at Pinehurst, was held in conjunction with the Men's Carolinas - Fred M. Laxton of Charlotte Country Club and Dorothy Dotger of Charlotte Country Club also, won the tournaments. (The WCGA 25th anniversary was held at Pinehurst in conjunction with the Men's, in 1957.) Mrs. J. M. Milam, of Greenville, South Carolina, was the 2nd President.
